adidas and Fear of God Athletics have officially dropped the highly-anticipated seasonal collection that includes the buzzed-about Basketball II Sneakers in a rich chocolate colorway. Introducing a new seasonal capsule of essential, sports-focused footwear, the adidas sub-brand continues to push boundaries — much like founder Jerry Lorenzo promised.

Earlier this year, Lorenzo mentioned that his collaborative label with adidas had more sneakers on the way, including a revamped pair of basketball shoes that put performance at the forefront. And while the original silhouette faced some on-court critiques, the Basketball II builds on what it started and progresses with intention; they’re allegedly much lighter and far more supportive, but still every bit as sleek as the initial design that debuted in late 2023 at the Hollywood Bowl show.

The latest spawn from these two iconic brands comes in both high- and mid-top silhouettes. Both pairs have three striking stripes and uppers doused in a muted shade named “Night Brown,” then placed atop grippy outsoles with a multi-directional traction pattern fit for the hardwood. As a finishing touch, each feature co-branding at the heel. Long-term ankle protection aside, a noteworthy difference between each design is the high-top’s collar strap for extra support.

And, if the adidas Fear of God Athletics sneakers already looks familiar to any basketball fans, that’s because they’ve already made their NBA debut. Lakers guard Gabe Vincent has been rocking them on-court all season long, so rest assured knowing your feet are in good hands if the pros are rocking this night in and night out.

Best of all, the latest sneakers from adidas and Fear of God are accompanied by a whole new capsule, highlighted by the Suede Fleece lineup’s enviously soft feel and sturdy, double-knit construction. Pieces in this collection include a mock-neck, half-zip, hoodie, and track jacket, as well as pairs of relaxed-fitting pants and shorts that compose a whole fit. No matter which combination you opt for, you’ll stay active and comfortable from the neck down.

Try to secure pieces from the upcoming Fear of God Athletics collection when it drops on December 6th, with the Basketball II available starting from $180.

A great set of winter sneakers should mirror the mail-carrier motto — they deliver in the rain, snow, sleet, or shine. Sneaker innovation has progressed so far that, odds are, there’s already a winter-ready version of your favorite shoe. With a world of technical materials at their feet, major brands have adopted these elements to reimagine everything from timeless silhouettes to popular running shoes.

Frigid forecasts can severely damage most pairs of walking shoes, leaving them stained, soggy, and unwearable. While we love a good pair of beaters, there’s nothing fun about leaving them out to dry all night, only to wake up the next morning and realize you can barely even step in them to grab breakfast.

And, like your shoes, your feet are valuable, too. Weatherproof sneakers provide the security to spare you from blisters and moisture build-up, so they’ll even help you avoid any sudden doctor’s appointments. Before going all in on a pair based on looks alone, take a deeper look at comfortable shoes for men or women featuring GORE-TEX membranes for breathable water protection, some insulation to keep your feet warm, and lugged soles so you can stay stable on slippery floors. Once a shoe has one of these, they’ll likely have them all, but consider what you’ll use them for.

Whether you need shoes geared toward rainy-day runs or something casual made of revamped materials, functionality doesn’t mean you’re sacrificing style. Some of the shoe game’s biggest names have shown their all-condition prowess, including On, Nike, and even Vans. Most recently, adidas dropped CORDURA-crafted Samba OG sneakers that sold out in seconds, so rest assured knowing that the world’s most popular shoes can still be fail-safe options in your closet once temperatures drop.

So follow our dedicated guide and see if your everyday pair has a weatherproof counterpart, or discover a new set of winter sneakers for your seasonal wardrobe.

adidas x Wales Bonner Samba Millenium Metallic Unisex Sneakers

No one’s asking you to leave brat green in 2024, but winter’s coolest sneaker trends come in a kaleidoscope of colors that’ll carry you well through the new year. So, no matter what end of the rainbow you’re trying to capture (or avoid entirely), there’s surely a pair of trendy shoes ready to help you achieve the hue you love.

With the rise of workwear and hiking-inspired fashion, earthy shades like moss green, beige, and brown have become equally popular, finding the flawless balance between rugged and tranquil. Some of the world’s finest brands have recently propelled this trend, including Dries Van Noten’s ’70s-esque sneakers and Asics’ cardboard-inspired joint effort with Doublet.

A dark, stealthy look could never go out of style either, a fact proven virtually every day, though most recently by Nike’s upcoming all-black Dunk Pack and teased Dover Street Market collab: a blacked-out pair of Vomero 5s with glowing green accents. But Nike’s not the only one getting in on the action, with pitch-dark partnerships put forth by everyone from Hagel and Asics to Under Armour and Balenciaga.

On the other hand, if you want something more colorful, consider the ubiquitous shade of burgundy or maroon, two hues that everyone from New Balance to Gucci has brought to light. Frankly, since the Italian luxury house unveiled its Rosso Ancora collection in late 2023, the merlot-colored train hasn’t slowed down, and Nike’s sneak peek at the Air Max 1000 suggests it’s only speeding up.

And if you need shoes that’ll bring extra shimmer to your ensemble, look no further! There’s an onslaught of silver silhouettes on the market and horizon, like Wales Bonner’s latest pair of Samba Millenniums, ALOHAS’ Tb.490, and Diesel’s Serendipity sneakers.

Like most years, 2024 has been more than kind to footwear brands paying homage to themselves, be that in the form of chunky pairs that help you pull off Y2K-inspired outfits from head to toe, iconic kicks that have stood the test of time since well before 2000, and several cutting-edge pairs that toe the lines between streamlined and mountainous. So whether you’re eyeing something sleek to wear while waiting for your seasonal flight or a chunkier pair to get you through the rain, our guide to the best sneaker color trends for winter has the right option.

Stealth Mode Shades

Best Sneaker Color Trends for Winter 2024
adidas Samba OG Shoes
It was only a matter of time until a pair of Sambas made its way to this color-coated guide, and here we have the same design that started it all. The blacked-out colorway sits on a dark brown rubber outsole that you can wear with your favorite black pants as you tune out whatever people say about the shoe going out of style.
ON Cloud 5 Men's Shoe
On Cloud 5 Shoes
No matter what you might think, the Cloud 5 is not exclusive to tech or finance bros, and they’re one of our guide’s more ubiquitous options for good reason. The popular trainers even underwent a redesign to ensure the right fit and promote improved energy with every step, whether heading to the gym in leggings or lounging in joggers.
New Balance 1000 Unisex Sneaker

Nike Air Max DN Winterizead Sneakers
Nike Air Max DN Winterized Sneakers
Nike’s Air Max DN made quite a first impression on the shelves in its initial year, so it was only a matter of time before the performance giant churned out a pair that was fit for taking on colder weather. Nike Shox RIde 2

Nike LD-1000
Nike LD-1000 Shoes
Three pairs of Nikes in a row? Don’t be surprised. The LD 1000 is an homage to the archives, taking inspiration from a late ‘70s icon that remains one of the brand’s most notable innovations, now presented with a jet, shaggy suede upper that goes to show there’s nothing wrong with occasionally going back to the basics.
Hoka One One Elite Terrain GTX
Hoka Elite Terrain System Kaha Low GTX Sneakers
Crafted with a Gore-Tex membrane and Vibram Megagrip outsole, Hoka’s textured steppers are the cross between hiking and lifestyle shoes. Its blend of dependable durability, waterproof prowess, and quality materials makes it the perfect pair for outdoor adventures or just walking around on a rainy day (in stealth mode, of course).

The timeless icon is available in countless colorways, including this premium brown leather option. No matter the material or color, Dunk Lows are as wearable as any shoe can get; like you, we’ve seen them pop up everywhere, from red carpets to supermarkets and GRWM videos to the club.

Wear them alongside your favorite indigo jeans for a pairing that can’t go wrong.
Nike Air VaporMax Plus Men's Sneaker
Nike Air VaporMax Plus Sneakers
Nike’s wine-coated spin on the Air VaporMax Plus is a marvel for many reasons, as it’s unlike any other shoe in its color category, and that’s mainly courtesy of the shoe’s innovative design. Set atop proprietary cushioning technology and an array of rubber pods for maximum traction and durability, the silhouette’s stacked construction adds a boost of height that works great with baggier pants.
Asics Gel-Stryax Unisex Shoes
Asics Gel-Stryax Shoes
While the mule talk has quieted down a bit as colder weather approaches, Asics’ Gel-Styrax is still a pair to keep in mind. The futuristic design takes after the company’s Mountain Clog and Transcend lines, bringing impact-absorbing tech and top-shelf stability to an effortless silhouette. Style them as you would your flashiest pair of trainers, and don’t be afraid to tack on some glowing greens that complement the accents
APL TechLoom Traveler Men's Shoes
APL TechLoom Traveler Shoes
APL’s trainers are on the pricier side, but their deluxe comfort offers all the more reason to consider adding to your cart. The brand calls its eye-catching TechLoom Traveler “an airport must-have,” much in part to its thoughtfully crafted slip-on construction that makes getting through TSA a breeze, as well as the Ultract outsole that keeps you light on your feet when standing for hours on end.

Brooks Running Glycerin StealthFit 21 Sneakers

Metallic Silver Styles

Adidas VL Court 3.0 Shoes
adidas VL Court 3.0 Shoes
Dubbed by many as the seamless alternative to combat constant Samba hype, the three stripes’ VL Court 3.0 silhouette is available in a variety of similar colors and materials, but this sleek silver option separates itself from the pack. While simple enough to wear with jeans and a tee, you can just as easily dress the sneaker up as many celebrities did with Sambas all awards season long.
Nike P-6000 Men's Shoe
Nike P-6000 Shoes
By Frankensteining two of its most popular Pegasus sneakers, Nike made some of the most prominent early-aughts silhouettes fit flawlessly in today’s world — yes, the same world where Y2K appeal is everywhere you look. With a cushy foam midsole and grippy rubber outsole, the track-inspired kicks are great to wear with casual outfits that suggest you just went on a run, although we don’t recommend actually running in these.
New Balance 1906R Unisex Sneaker
New Balance 1906R Sneakers
Every pair of New Balances you see on the street is just an extra confirmation that the ‘dad shoe trend’ is no longer a trend, but a mainstay. The Boston-bred brand’s lifestyle sneaker combines its signature Acteva Lite cushioning and Abzorb SBS pods at the heel to deliver a set of kicks that are as comfortable as they are cutting-edge, met by a futuristic look that will have you running errands in style.
Salomon Xt-4 Og - Unisex Sportstyle Sneaker
Salomon Xt-4 OG Sneakers
As one of the shoe game’s hottest options, Salomon’s XT-4 OG is one of the more versatile silhouettes around, designed to coexist with anything from gorpy activewear to plain ol’ jorts and a tee. Like all other pairs, this shining colorway boasts the same dual-density EVA cushioning that’s kept customers comfortable and protected for years, whether on rugged terrain or city streets.
Adidas x Wales Bonner Samba Millenium Metalic Unisex Sneaker
adidas x Wales Bonner Samba Millenium Metallic Unisex Sneakers
As part of its most recent collection with adidas, Wales Bonner’s latest take on the iconic Samba shimmers from heel to toe. Its standout design is based around a two-tone-and-texture leather upper akin to a mullet — except smooth in the front and croc-embossed in the back — that’s easy to rock with virtually any pair of pants, be them skinny or baggy or jeans or trousers.

Nike Motiva Shoes Review: These New Walking Sneakers Are One of the Best Self-Care Purchases I’ve Made This Year https://footwearnews.com/shop/shoes-guide/nike-motiva-walking-shoes-1234729975/ Tue, 12 Nov 2024 20:37:23 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234729975 All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. Who buys two pairs of the same shoe? The idea of this would normally baffle me, even though I own well over 150-plus pairs of shoes, until I realized how crucial Nike Motiva walking shoes were for all-day foot comfort when walking on hard floors. Today, the Google Hot 100 list confirmed my thoughts, as the Swoosh brand’s first true walking shoe was dubbed a top holiday gift for 2024 — and I couldn’t agree more.

New York is a walking city, but as podiatrist Dr. Scott M. Whitney, DPM, mentioned when I recently visited his office to have my feet examined, most New Yorkers prioritize fashion over function. I, too, am guilty of clocking over 30,000 steps in a single day, making moves across the fast-paced city in designer footwear that offers little support or comfort for my aching feet. Sometimes, we need to learn a lesson the hard way. But that day, as I power walked my way to the podiatrist’s office, I had an extra pep in my step while sporting my new Nike Motiva walking shoes.

As Footwear News previously reported, the demand for quality walking shoes for women and men surged during the pandemic, yet it remained a mostly untapped opportunity in the athletic market. To our excitement, the Nike Motiva shoe launched in May 2023 for women, which according to demographics, makes total sense (women outweighed men in walking workout studies). By August 2023, I was finally able to get my tired feet in a pair of the Motiva walking shoes for men to put them to the new release to the test. Now, over a year later with a second pair in my shoe closet, I honestly can say testing the Nike Motiva Walking Shoes was one of the best decisions — and purchases — I’ve ever made.

Will this fast-walking New Yorker put his curated collection of designer Oxford shoes, Chelsea boots, and sleek leather loafers away for good? No, certainly not — but these Nike walking shoes have become a go-to footwear workhorse for pounding the pavement on those especially active days when I need all the support I can get.

How We Tested the Nike Motiva Walking Shoes

Editor Testing & Review: Nike Motiva Walking Shoes

Unboxing the Nike Motiva Shoes, your eyes immediately gravitate to the striking Comfortgroove outsole; the innovation that works in tandem with Nike’s Cushlon 3.0 full-length foam midsole to soften the impact of your steps. As other Nike Motiva reviews have noted, the exaggerated rocker and Comfortgroove technology can feel strange at first as the shoe propels you forward, but once you trust it, you’ll be delighted by the plush comfort and ease of movement — it begins to feel natural, and you’ll miss it when you switch to other shoe styles.

Unboxing the Nike Motiva walking shoes.Footwear News/ Adam Mansuroglu

Some other noticeable details when you first see and feel the Nike walking shoe include the padded foam collar, the internal half-bootie that connects to the shoe’s tongue, and a firm heel cup, which together makes the shoe more comfortable and easy to slide on, while also providing much-needed support with a snug fit as you take strides with cushioned bliss.

To see how comfortable Nike Motiva Shoes really are, I wore them while taking my dog to the park — and I’m not talking about your typical, leisurely park stroll. My not-so-leash-trained, energetic dog (that somehow channels the strength of a large sled dog) pulled me through the city streets, down gravel paths, up grassy hills and along dirt trails on a multi-hour adventure through Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t experience a moment of discomfort while maintaining stability on the varying terrains.

Dr. Whitney was quick to point out what made the Motiva a great walking shoe for my feet. The higher heel-to-toe drop and rocker bottom prevented any strain on my high arches, especially as a fast-walking heel striker. (Thanks to years of wearing fancy dress shoes on a daily basis, I suffer from mild plantar fasciitis.) Though I have borderline neutral-width feet, I was also happy with the roomy toe box that’s less common in Nike sneaker styles.

The Motiva isn’t necessarily for everyone, but there’s no one-shoe-fits-all footwear solution. Yes, the textile upper is less breathable than Nike Flyknit technology, but I imagine that flexible fabric wouldn’t be great for foot stability, and thankfully, my feet only sweat during the most intense workouts. The Motiva’s bold silhouette and performance shoe appearance doesn’t make it the most versatile sneaker for all occasions. However, as a longtime fashion editor, I found the University Red and Obsidian colorway to be a perfect pairing for all-black casual attire and complimentary to light indigo denim outfits. Now available in black and off-white colorways, there are more subtle Motiva options for those who don’t favor bold footwear style.

In short, the Nike Motiva walking shoes feel like the equivalent of a spa day for my typically tired, aching feet; the not-so-guilty pleasure of a step in the right direction towards the proper foot care this city guy truly needed.

Update: Testing the Nike Motiva Walking Shoes One Year Later

This year, Nike released more subtle colorways of the Motiva walking shoe, which I took as a sign to finally purchase a second pair after a couple of brutal months where I spent one way too many days in constricting dress shoes with little-to-no arch support. Not only did my arches ache and throb daily, but my toes needed some breathing room, so I knew it was time to commit to my new Motivas and wear them on my feet for two-weeks straight.

Unlike the first time I wore Nike Motiva walking shoes, the unexpected propelling motion from the exaggerated rocker bottoms didn’t feel as awkward with the first wear (possibly because my feet were so damaged at that point). In an off-white colorway, these chunky sneakers were perfect to pair with wide-leg trousers and straight-leg jeans, so while I ran across town, stood on set for photo shoots, and sprinted from meeting to meeting, I was able to pair these everyday shoes with all of my business casual looks and my casual weekend fits. Truthfully, the Motivas didn’t seem to catch the eyes of co-workers in the same way a pair of shoes would in a particularly bold color or pattern (remember, we’re footwear editors, so everyone checks out each other’s shoes in the office). While the silhouette of the Motiva might seem a bit extreme due to the outsole and ample cushioning, they have a much more naturally look when you put them on with your daily attire.

The results of my Motiva recovery experiment: my feet felt like they had finally received the much-needed vacation that was long overdue, from my toes to my arches to the heels — no fancy massages needed. Now, especially after a day in a pair of lace-up oxfords or patent leather loafers, I have my Motiva shoes ready for the next morning to hit the ground walking.

Top Burgundy Sneakers of 2024

Burgundy is the new neutral. You’ve seen the rich red color everywhere lately, but have you added the versatile colorway to your footwear rotation? Over the past few seasons of runway collections, trendsetting fashion houses have rapidly embraced the red colorway — such as Gucci’s new signature color Rosso Ancora — and shown it’s ability to pair perfectly with neutrals, black, neons and pastels. On TikTok, well over 8 million posts feature styling tips and red-hot releases of “burgundy shoes”, many of which include top sneaker brands and your favorite athletic shoe styles dipped in the deep red hue that range from burgundy to maroon.

The fashion set might have been first to the burgundy sneaker trend — especially sporting the popular adidas SL72 shoes that featured a punch of burgundy red — but now, you can find styles from New Balance, Nike, Vans and more in the color of the moment. Adidas’s maroon Gazelles might be available still in limited sizing, but the brand’s new SNS x adidas GT11 style won’t last on the shoe shelves for long, just like its recent collaboration with Song for the Mute that gave the Country OG a splash of deep red with a rich, textural mix of mohair, velvet, suede and patent leather details. Back in late October, MaroonNYC and Ceeze debuted a limited-edition New Balance 580 shoe with a croc-embossed texture that came with a heavy price tag, but you can still snag 574s, 1906Rs and styles from the 990 series in the must-have burgundy colorway. Many more retro-inspired classics are also getting the rich red treatment at Nike, including Dunk Lows, Air Jordan 1s, Air VaporMax Plus shoes, and Air Force 1 styles, along with modern classics like the P-6000 sneakers.

Beloved sneaker brands like APL are all serving up burgundy sneakers that made it to the top of our wish lists, but for those with cash to burn, designer sneakers like Maison Margiela Replica low-tops with complimentary gum soles have been some of the most coveted kicks for fashion-forward fans this year. Even Loewe gave their Flow Runners a burgundy boost of color. Coach, Rag & Bone, Prada, Tods, and many more all offer rich red casual shoes to fit everyone’s style and budget.

Whether you’re looking for a touch of the autumunal color on fresh white sneakers or are in the market for a full-bodied vino drip of your go-to sneaker styles, we curated the best burgundy sneakers you’ll want to compliment your fits this season.

adidas Gazelle Indoor Shoes
If you missed out on the SL72s in this rich, retro-like color combination, you still have time to secure the Gazelles in maroon with “Almost Yellow” laces and touches of “Preloved Brown”. This lustworthy color combination on one of the most popular adidas shoe styles pairs perfectly with brown chinos, jewel-toned cords, and of course, ’90s-style indigo jeans.

I purchased a pair a couple months ago and simply adore how they add retro flair to classic wardrobe staples. The narrow sneaker silhouette makes these burgundy sneakers ideal for straight-leg trousers and jeans.

If you have high arches, finding the most supportive walking shoes for your foot shape can help support you with every step you take — and prevent serious discomfort. “Typically, high arches cause pain,” says explains London-based celebrity podiatrist Marion Yau. “As a result, the heel and toes of your foot are under extra stress since the sole of your foot doesn’t provide much support. Runners and walkers may find it difficult to cope with the added stress.” That’s why it’s essential to own walking shoes that are specifically designed with arch and joint support in mind, with key features like generous cushioning, supportive insoles, and a roomy toe box.

High arches are the opposite of flat feet — those with high arches have more lift in the middle of their foot. “Our foot’s arch plays an important role in running and walking, maintaining balance, absorbing shock, and adapting to different surfaces,” explains Yau, adding that “there are some people who are born with high arches in their feet, and there are others who have medical conditions that contribute to their high arches.”

To determine whether or not you have high arches, Yau suggests a handy at-home test: “Using a piece of paper or concrete, wet your feet and stand on the surface,” she says. “Look at the imprint left behind after you move your feet. An individual with high arches will only see an imprint of their heel and front of their foot.” If that’s your result, you’re far from alone — the Cleveland Clinic estimates that about 20 percent of adults have high-arched feet.

High arches can make you more prone to a range of health conditions, according to Yau, such as metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, hammertoes, bunions, ankle instability, corns, or calluses. You may also have a tendency to supinate, which means that you place more weight on the outside of your foot while walking. For these reasons, we’ve included the best shoes for plantar fasciitis, the best shoes for bunions, and the best ankle support shoes on our list for all-around support for multiple concerns.

To find the best walking shoes for high arches, we consulted top experts. In addition to Yau, we also interviewed Dr. Emily Spichal, a podiatrist and founder of Naboso, as well as Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, a podiatrist and member of the Vionic Innovation Lab.

Editors’ Choice: Top 3 Walking Shoes for High Arches of 2024

Footwear News Shop editors routinely research the best shoes for the range of common foot types and concerns by enlisting invaluable podiatrist insight, riding the pulse of innovative shoe releases, and even learning first-hand as we treat pesky strain in our own high-arched feet. Our selections in this roundup of the best walking shoes for high arches is a result of comprehensive footwear market research, which includes pinpointing top brands that offer the best underfoot cushioning, arch support, and comfortable materials, as well as durable outsole traction and responsive midsoles that allow optimal energy return, no matter the terrain you roam.

While walking shoes for high arches require key supportive elements, they also come in a variety of styles that serve different functions. For this reason, our editors curated our top three options that represent a range of price points, style preferences, and comfort features. Each sneaker was rated on a checklist of essential criteria, such as arch support, cushioned comfort, durability, and versatile style.

  • Nike Motiva Walking Shoes: Nike’s Motiva shoe comes highly recommended by one Footwear News Shop editor with high arches for its plush cushioning support and strain relief. Its cool, modern design gives more flair than a typical performance sneaker, all while boasting key elements that make for a superb walking shoe for high arches, such as a rocker heel, sock-absorption technology, padded collar, and a wide, roomy fit.
  • Salomon Xt-6 Sneakers: The Salomon Xt-6 sneakers are a stylish, ultra-supportive walking sneaker for those with high arches. Durable traction provides stable footing on slick surfaces (they are technically trail-running shoes), while a deep heel cup and contoured insole hug the foot. One Footwear News editor with high arches and frequent bouts of plantar fasciitis swears by them.
  • adidas Ultraboost 5X Sneakers: These top adidas walking shoes pair arch support with impressive energy return. Cushioned but not too heavy, the new Ultraboost 5X sneakers are an excellent choice for those who favor power walks, or someone in need of an everyday sneaker for both walking and running.

Nike Motiva Walking Shoes
Size range: 6 to 15 men’s; 5 to 12 women’s
Colorways:
Black, red, blue, white, pink, and more
Materials: Recycled plastic, rubber
Special features:
Comfortgroove outsole; 1/2-inner sleeve; waterfall collar
The Motiva walking shoe was one of Nike’s top releases of 2023, and pose as an ideal everyday sneaker for hours-long foot support. The shoe’s shining feature is its exaggerated Comfortgroove rocker outsole that aids in super smooth transitions and practically effortless strides. You can rely on ultra-cushioned landings in these shoes, which are specially designed for shock absorption and all-around soft support, from a padded foam collar and heel, to an inner sleeve that reduces friction on your feet. Motiva’s wide-set footbed makes it a superb shoe for wide feet as well, and its breathable mesh upper will keep you feeling — and looking — cool.

Editor testing and review notes: “Upon a long walk with my dog wearing the Motiva shoes, I realized that for the first time in a long time, I didn’t experience a moment of discomfort while maintaining stability on the varying terrains. My podiatrist explained that the Motiva is a great walking shoe for my feet for its higher heel-to-toe drop and rocker bottom, which prevents any strain on my high arches, especially as a fast-walking heel striker. (Thanks to years of wearing fancy dress shoes on a daily basis, I suffer from mild plantar fasciitis.) Though I have borderline neutral-width feet, I was also happy with the roomy toe box that’s less common in Nike sneaker styles.” — Footwear News Director of Commerce Adam Mansuroglu

What testers say: “I’ve owned what feels like hundreds of Nike shoes and these by far are the best for overall design and maximum comfort! In my opinion everyone should try out these incredible shoes. Whoever designed these shoes deserves an award.”

Colorways:
Over 15 available
Materials: EVA cushioning, TPU film and mesh upper, high-traction Contagrip tread
Special features: Toggle lacing system; Agile Chassis System provides extra stability
Before the Salomon Xt-6 Sneakers were adopted by trendsetters like Emily Ratajkowski, Lily Collins, and Sophie Turner, these shoes were considered the gold standard for tackling tough terrain in harsh weather. And while they make pretty flawless trail running shoes, our editors recommend them for long walks on city streets, too — particularly for those with problematic feet. The Salomon Xt-6 shoes have a deep heel cup that’s essential for keeping those with high arches in proper alignment. If you like to feel like your feet are being cradled from the ground up, these are the walking shoes for high arches to reach for.

One major pro to the Salomon Xt-6 sneakers is their durability. The outsole provides traction to take you from rocky trails to slick pavement safely, while reinforcement near the toe keeps your feet protected on rough hikes.

Editor testing and review notes: “My Salomon sneakers are the best investment I’ve made for my foot health, hands down. I was initially drawn to the ‘gorpcore’ style of the shoes, but it’s the comfort that keeps me coming back. I have such high arches that my midfoot rarely makes contact with the insole of the shoe, however these sneakers have a deep heel cup that allows my entire foot to fall in place. They’ve become my go to walking shoes when I’m embarking on a long stroll in New York City, and they’re my go-to shoes for relief when I’m dealing with a plantar fasciitis flare up.” — Senior Lifestyle and Beauty Commerce Editor Claire Sullivan

adidas’ Ultraboost 5X sneakers lend major wattage to your power walks. The popular running shoe got an update this fall to decrease the sneaker’s weight while upping the energy return, propelling you forward for a smooth, floaty stroll. Notably, these walking shoes for high arches feature adidas’ Torsion system for rock-solid stability, while a stretchy mesh upper prevents pressure on the top of the foot, which is common for those with high arches. This is an excellent option for those who like the feel of a cushioned running shoe — this new-and-improved iteration offers 9mm more foam in the midsole.

Editor testing and review notes: “Trusty heel-to-toe comfort truly sets adidas’ Ultraboost 5X sneakers apart from previous pairs. After a couple of steps in these sneakers, the emphasis on energy return was evident, and that’s all thanks to the airy and responsive Light BOOST midsole. I even wore the Ultraboost 5X sneakers to the gym in place of my typical adidas workout shoes, spending time on the stair climber and rowing machine, only to realize they’re just as equipped to take on all types of daily exercises — not just running.” — Footwear News contributor Yoni Yardeni

In these top New Balance sneakers, you’ll enjoy midfoot cushioning from the brand’s Acteva Lite foam, plus extra structure with a Stability Web outsole that keeps your foot in proper alignment from foot strike to toe off.

Editor testing and review notes: “As a longtime fashion editor, walking shoes might not seem like the most exciting sneaker category, but New Balance changed the game. The resurgence of textural Y2K-era running shoes as modern lifestyle sneakers deliver the support my arches need with a look that adds a sporty flair to workwear and compliments weekend outfits. adidas Supernova Rise Sneakers

Colorways:
Over 10 options
Materials: Mesh upper, Dreamstrike+ midsole, Adiwear outsole
Special features: Support Rods improve stability
This lightweight walking shoe from adidas packs great value. The Supernova Rise sneakers feature the brand’s Dreamstrike foam that propels you forward while absorbing impact, making them a great choice for everyday strolls (and runs). While they’re not as plush as other sneakers on our list, a deep heel cup and ample midfoot cushioning caters to high arches.

Editor testing and review notes: “These adidas sneakers are comfortable straight out of the box. The day I unboxed them, I wore them on a six mile walk in New York City and didn’t experience an ounce of rubbing or a single blister. I have very high arches that often cause many sneakers to apply pressure on the top of my feet that gets increasingly painful throughout the day — the Supernova Rise sneakers have a soft, stretchy upper that prevents this from happening. They’re low-profile enough for me to wear them to brunch with a pair of jeans when my plantar fasciitis is flaring up, which is a bonus, too.” — Sullivan

What to Look for in the Best Walking Shoes for High Arches

Having high arches can lead to a slew of uncomfortable or painful foot conditions, but fortunately, choosing the right footwear can alleviate pain from common problems and discomfort, as well as helping to prevent the development of new conditions. Here are some factors to keep in mind when shopping for walking shoes for high arches, according to podiatrists.

  • Arch support insoles: In order to feel comfortable while walking, you need a shoe that supports the shape of your foot. “ I always recommend shoes with arch support and cushion inside,” says Yau. “In addition to stabilizing and supporting the foot, the arch support also provides some comfort. As a result, pressure from the ground is distributed evenly throughout the foot, preventing pressure from being isolated. A foot arch support can ease foot pain as well as arch pain.”
  • Cushioned insoles: You should look for walking shoes that are fitted with cushioned insoles, or alternatively add your own supination insoles. “High-arched feet are best treated with supportive, softer and more flexible, lightweight types of soles to accommodate the high arch,” says Dr. Sutera. “Avoid rigid, stiff, and flat shoes. The purpose of insoles and orthotics for those with high-arched feet is to accommodate, absorb shock and cushion.”
  • Deep, wide toe box: Since those with high arches can often have hammertoes (toes that point upwards at the joint), they will benefit from walking shoes that can accommodate their toes. “My recommendation is to wear shoes with a deep, wide toe box,” says Yau. “The toe box is located at the front of the shoe, enclosing the toes. By doing so, the hammertoes can be accommodated and pain can be reduced.” The best shoes for wide feet help.
  • Heel-toe drop: A slight heel-toe drop (meaning the shoe’s sole is higher at the back than at the front) can also help support those with high arches to walk comfortably. “This means that the heel is thicker than the front of the shoe, unlike a platform or very flat shoe,” Dr. Sutera says. “These tend to be better for those who need more arch support.” But this doesn’t mean you should favor a high-heeled shoe by any means. “ When the heel height is extremely high, the foot can be tipped forward due to the awkward angle caused by high arches,” warns Yau. “A result of this will be pain and deformities in the toes that result from clawing and jamming.”

What Does It Mean to Have High Arches?

The foot arch we’re referring to here is the curve underneath your foot. “High arches are a higher arch than normal,” explains Yau. “On the bottom of the foot, the arch runs from the toes to the heel, and in high-arch foot types the mid part of the foot is raised. Pes cavus is another name for this condition. A high arch is the opposite of a flat foot.”

Having high arches can unfortunately lead to a range of issues. “A high-arched foot is one that is typically more rigid and with restricted mobility in the ankle and hips. This means that a high-arch foot may have a harder time absorbing impact forces and transferring force,” explains functional podiatrist Dr. Emily Splichal.

Choosing the right footwear for high arches is crucial in preventing the development foot conditions. “If you have high arches, you should choose supportive shoes because wearing the wrong type of shoes can cause pain when walking or standing,” says Yau. “Having a high-arch foot can also lead to claw [toes] and hammertoes, as well as calluses on the toes and bottom of the foot, which can lead to ulcers. High arches can also change your foot’s shape, making finding shoes that fit difficult. Foot pain can be exacerbated by wearing shoes that don’t fit.”

Skate shoes may be trending, but there’s one brand that has that ethos embedded in its DNA: Vans. Whether it’s low-top styles for casual wear or souped-up options strictly for the skate park, the best Vans shoes have an impressive history of craftsmanship to back their notable design. From the best walking shoes for men to comfortable sneakers for women, the brand has catered to everyone and every style for decades.

Originally made with skateboarders and athletes in mind, Vans has produced innovative designs over the past five decades. The debut shoes were known for offering ankle support for boarding tricks and durability to keep up with wipeouts. Today, Vans has extended its product line to include options for other sports, too, like surfing and BMX, and now there are more lifestyle options made for daily wear, even if you’re not into the sports scene.

While any Vans shoe style is timeless, there are a few that remain best-sellers time and time again — and have even earned high honors as Footwear News’ Greatest Shoes of All Time. First up, the Vans Old Skool shoe, a classic design from the brand that was first seen in the 1970s. There’s also the Classic Slip-On Shoe, which caught the attention of surfers due to its easy pull-on-and-off silhouette. Like the Old Skool shoe, the Classic slip-on shoes are crafted with Vans’ traditional canvas material, a flexible fabric that’s both breathable and sturdy. And of course, the Vans Authentic shoe that launched with the brand back in 1966 and remains an affordable everyday favorite — even among fashion icons like Harry Styles who recently sported them at London Fashion Week.

On the topic of canvas shoes, Vans is one of the best shoe brands to have in your wardrobe based on its proprietary canvas materials alone. Each pair is exceptionally durable, machine-washable, and lightweight, while a thick rubber sole provides stability and grip for quick movement and walking on slick surfaces. These days, Vans has adapted its strategy to use other synthetic materials like leather and suede, incorporating modern and stylish twists to beloved classics.

Vans has seen a surge in popularity, mainly due to the resurgence of the Y2K-inspired skateboard trends in streetwear fashion and on social media. On TikTok, searches for #Vans have amassed an astounding 6 billion views, while the term “My Vans Collection” has amassed over 23 million posts. In just the past year, style stars like Emily Ratajkowski, Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, and Zoë Kravitz have all been seen sporting Vans in their off-duty style, while long-time fans like Justin Bieber continue to keep them in rotation.

Vans also stays relevant in the market with buzzy collaborations with the likes of Barbie, Gucci, JJJJound, and Gallery Dept. Plus, the brand continues to draw to its past to update icons. The summer 2024 “Always Out There” collection plucked bold and chunky silhouettes from its ’90s and early aughts archives, reintroducing the Hylane, Upland, and Mixxa shoes with modern design touches and added comfort features.

Vans shoes aren’t just popular with skaters; they’re also the shoe of choice for anyone who loves a simple, reliable pair of sneakers. If you’re looking for a durable and comfortable pair of shoes, rest assured our below picks will tick every box.

What testers say: “They fit true to size and are really comfy. In my experience, flat-sole shoes can be uncomfortable, but these are nicely padded all over. They look very stylish as well. They sit pretty low around the ankle, so a pair of no-show socks works great with them.”

The History of Vans Shoes

Vans’ history began in 1966, when brothers Paul and James van Doren founded the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California. The mission of the company was to provide the community with high-quality footwear — sans the expensive cost. The brothers began to produce and sell the shoes through their first store, which was adjacent to the factory that crafted each pair. The first pair of Vans sold was called the #44 Deck shoe — now known as the “Authentic” — which had a low profile silhouette that initially caught the attention of skateboarders. The shoes were the first of their kind to feature an outsole twice as thick as what other brands were crafting, and that rubber sole delivered impressive grip for skaters and athletes alike.

The brand kept expanding its offerings through the 1960s and 1970s, and in 1976, a modern iteration of the #44 shoes was reimagined by athletes Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. The updated look included a padded ankle collar; you might recognize it as the “Era” model today. Vans kept expanding their shoes through the ’70s and, in 1977, added the Old Skool, Sk8-Hi, and Slip-On, which are popular with skateboarders, surfers, and BMX riders today.

1989 brought the Caballeros (inspired by skater Steve Caballero) shoes to life. Vans cut the collar off to provide more ankle movements so athletes could have more flexibility while skating. Over the next few years, the shoes evolved into the Half Cab, a mid-top option.

For decades, Vans held its own in the sneaker market and gained a new fan base with hip-hop artists like Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco. This attention also caused the fashion world to pay attention, which prompted designers such as Marc Jacobs and Junya Watanabe to put their spin on the brand’s models.

Today, Vans has expanded its offering of classics to include trainers, high- and low-top silhouettes, and even platform shoes. Apart from new-and-improved designs, Vans has also introduced other materials (besides the traditional canvas the brand is known for) to their shoes. Vans shoes now come in synthetic materials like rubber and leather, allowing you plentiful options to choose from when shopping.

How Do Vans Shoes Fit?

Vans shoes are often true to size. The brand’s flexible canvas, suede, or soft leather uppers bode well for narrow to wide feet types, along with staple round-toe boxes that don’t pinch toes during intense activity or standing all day. However, keep in mind that Vans shoes lean more narrow, as they are designed for skateboarding where snug fits and side wall structure are ideal. Refer to the Vans shoe size chart to select your correct sizing for men and women.

Vans shoes also come in wide sizing for those who need more room. Several styles, including the Vans Classic Slip-On Shoes and Vans Sk8-Hi Shoes, offer wide-size options. If your foot is particularly wide, consider choosing a half size up than your usual size for extra wiggle room.

Luckily, Vans shoes rarely require a lengthy break-in period. After a handful of wears, the uppers will loosen and your feet will feel right at home in your new pair. But, if you need a tip for how to break in Vans Slip-Ons or other styles faster, consider wearing thick socks to stretch out the material or test driving around your house before you commit to a full day of wear.

Fall is the best season to invest in a new pair of boots before harsh weather blows in, so it’s important to choose a pair that’s exceptionally resilient and versatile for regular wear through the winter. You’d be hard-pressed to find a shoe that ticks every box quite like Dr. Martens’ fall boots and shoes. Not only is the cult-favorite footwear tough enough to brave rain, snow, and slush, but it also offers undeniable attitude and polish to any outfit. Plus, Dr. Martens’ wide array of styles delivers on decades of durability.

Dr. Martens men’s and women’s shoes will stand the test of time in your shoe rotation, much like they have in the footwear market over the last century. Also known as “Docs,” the brand’s heritage designs originated as workwear boots and gardening shoes, before being adopted by subcultures throughout the decades as edgy combat boots. In 1945, recovering WWII soldier Dr. Klaus Maertens developed the shoes’ original air-cushioned soles to soothe his broken foot before incorporating excess military supplies into their design, establishing their famous practicality and grit. By the ’60s, the brand added legacy signatures like heel loops and yellow contrast stitching to mark heat-sealed Goodyear Welting between the upper and sole, ushering in the iconic Dr. Martens 1460 boot — one of the Greatest Shoes of All Time, according to Footwear News.

Today, Dr. Martens’ boots and shoes are wardrobe staples for all ages and style perspectives. From The Who’s Pete Townshend sporting the 1460s stage in 1967 to Olivia Rodrigo representing Gen Z’s obsession with leather styles in her regular street style, Docs bring a heritage punk panache that allows for boundless reinvention in modern contexts. The brand celebrates this unique feat in its boundary-pushing 14XX line that reinterprets its workwear roots with tech-driven upgrades to archival silhouettes. Following the fall of 2023 launch, its latest “Protect Pack” drop just ushered in exaggerated iterations of the 1460 boot, 1461 shoe, and 2976 Chelsea boot, which all come defined by weather- and abrasion-resistant construction, taking the brand’s legacy of durability one step further.

And, in just the last year, Dr. Martens Ramsey Creeper shoes were made over by Girls Don’t Cry with wedge platform soles, Supreme added rub-off coloring to the 1461 Oxford, and Nine Inch Nails released a ’90s-inspired collection of 1461 boots printed in album artwork. On top of these collaborations, Dr. Martens continues to update its classics, like the recent Lowell Collection that reissued an archive workwear design or the fall 14XX “Protect Pack” drop that redesigned three iconic models with maximalist touches.

The beauty of Docs is their intrinsic versatility, which means any ensemble can be a Dr. Martens outfit. The unisex shoes are built to go with just about anything, from office dresses and suits to wide-leg trousers to daily denim. Plus, they’ll outlast every other pair of shoes in your closet. To get into the fall spirit, kick off your shoe-shopping extravaganza with these Dr. Martens icons that are tough, cool, and timeless, making them the ideal footwear for fall and many seasons to come.

Dr. Martens 1460 Smooth Leather Lace Up Boots
Dr. Martens’ most iconic boot is the 1460. The brand’s first-ever shoe launched in 1960 and, according to Footwear News, carries the title of one of the Greatest Shoes of All Time.

Its counterculture heritage has transcended decades and trends, where its most recent comeback amounted to 30 million pairs sold between 2015 and 2024. Made with smoothed-out leather, the 1460 features the brand’s signature 8-eye lacing, Goodyear-welted construction, and yellow contrast stitching. Consider this style the gold standard combat boot.

Dr. Martens Vegan Sinclair Platform Boots
The brand may be renowned for durable leather, but Dr. Martens’ vegan construction deserves its own applause. The Dr. Martens Sinclair Platform Boots front the brand’s bold and edgy aesthetic with glossy patent leather and a super-stacked 1.5-inch sole. They hit just above the ankle to peek under baggy jeans or frilly women’s socks and feature all the same Goodyear welting durability as other Dr. Martens classics. The best part? These babies are one of few Docs with a convenient zipper closure. Easy on, easy off.

Editor testing and review notes: “As a petite girl — 5 feet to be exact — and an ex-vegan who shops leather with intention, I adore these boots. I love that their shine adds a touch of flair to any outfit and the patent leather is SO easy to wipe clean (I just dusted mine off for the fall and winter season!). The platform is chunky and so Y2K but surprisingly comfortable to walk in. Just make sure you test drive them on your stairs at home. I wear them all the time, rain or shine.” — Commerce Writer & Producer Olivia Cigliano

Dr. Martens Jadon Smooth Leather Platform Boots
The Dr. Martens Jadon Platform Boot has all of the edge and history of your classic Docs but made even edgier with the dramatic platform lug outsole. The “indie sleaze” staple dates back to its conception in 2013 when the brand set off to meld the DNA of the 1460 boot with extreme design additions, like the now-signature Quad platform sole. Today, it’s a staple no matter your aesthetic, with grippy grooved traction, side zip closures, and polished leather uppers.

What testers say: “These are my first pair of Dr. Martens and I’m in LOVE. Usually I wear a women’s 7 or 7.5 so sized down and they fit perfectly! I love the platform design. Theres plenty of cushion for all-day wear.”

Editor testing and review notes: “These cuties are my office shoes of choice because they’re comfortable and incredibly easy to style. I especially love that they’re durable enough to withstand my morning commute in New York City while still looking dressy for professional settings. Dr. Martens Maybole Square Toe Mary Jane Shoes
The Maybole Square Toe Mary Jane Shoes are among Dr. Martens’ most viral new releases for fall 2024. In just a few months, they’ve already been featured in over two million dedicated TikTok posts, with Docs fans obsessing over its fashion-forward design. Available in trendy black cherry and versatile black colorways, this shoe offers equal parts edge and feminine flair, perfect for pairing with denim, slip dresses, or knee-high socks for the full “coquette” effect.

What testers say: “These are seriously so cute. They are also incredibly comfy. The red leather is gorgeous and is perfectly complimented by the black polish, too.  I bought these to wear on my wedding day and I’m so excited to do so! Dr. Martens 2976 DM’s Wintergrip Leather Chelsea Boots
Few shoe silhouettes are as timeless and convenient as slip-on Chelsea boots, but Dr. Martens, of course, upped the ante with this style. Designed to counter the chaos of Jack Frost, this boot features upgraded Wintergrip outsoles and the brand’s cleat-like Gripwait traction to keep you from slipping on ice and wet ground. Its “Blizzard” leather uppers are water and salt-resistant while insulting fleece lining keeps your feet warm and cozy in any storm. This Dr. Martens fur-lined style is a reliable winter boot with stylish appeal — and near-weatherproof durability.

What testers say: “A great winter boot! I wear these as my everyday casual winter cold-weather boots. I needed something with fleece as it gets quite cold and wet outside while walking the dogs. I usually wear a size 7 in Docs but I sized up for this one to accommodate the fleece interior and it was perfect. I would recommend a size up if your regular size doesn’t have any extra room.”

Dr. Martens 1914 Smooth Leather Tall Boots
For some added coverage in the calf department, consider the 1914 Smooth Leather Tall Boots a functional fashion statement. They’re essentially an elongated version of the classic 1460, with air-cushioned soles, textured leather, and 14-eye lacing. The shaft hits in the middle of the calf, so it bodes well as an extra layer of warmth in frigid temperatures or for pairing with knee-high socks and hosiery.

What testers say: “Absolutely perfect! I’ve been looking for some tall lace-up boots with no platform because I’m 5’10” and these are just awesome. They fit true to size. I recommend wearing socks longer than the boots underneath.”

How to Break in Dr. Martens Boots

Dr. Martens’ leather boots and shoes are notorious for their earned break-in period, but not all styles are the same. For instance, genuine leather boots will soften with wear and develop a soft patina, which eventually relieves their original stiff fit. Vegan Docs, however, are most common in a patent leather finish, which will remain fairly rigid with limited break-in potential so it’s important to select your correct size using the brand’s size guide before placing your order. Dr. Martens offers several tricks to make the initial wear more comfortable, such as inserting heel pads or investing Double Docs Socks to relieve friction between your feet and the durable leather.

To accelerate the break-in process, Dr. Martens recommends applying leather conditioner or Dr. Martens’ Wonder Balsam on the shoe’s interior to soften the leather. Fans on TikTok have shared a wealth of other DIY tips, like applying heat with a hair dryer, stuffing the shoe with ice and freezing it overnight to expand the material, or even massaging the leather with a hammer.

“I’ve owned several iterations of Docs in my time and there’s always a break-in period — but it’s so worth it,” says Footwear News Shop Commerce Writer and Producer, Olivia Cigliano. “My best advice is to wear thick socks or layer two pairs during that time, as stiff leather uppers can rub and irritate your heels and ankles. Just be prepared to test drive your boots before you take them along for a long haul.”

Red alert: Rihanna’s newest Fenty x Puma Avanti sneakers have finally dropped — but you’ll want to act fast to secure your size in brand-new red and white colorways.

The Footwear News cover star teased the “Club Red” Fenty x Puma Avanti L sneakers in July while attending a Manchester City vs. AC Milan soccer game in New York City, alongside a star-studded suite of friends wearing the matching “Warm White” version. The cherry colorway leans into bold red fall 2024 color trends, while the softer white iteration circles back to the same colorway from the spring Fenty x Puma Creeper Phatty Earth Tone collection, offering a more vintage-inspired, lived-in feel to versatile white sneakers. Last February, Rihanna also released the extremely limited Fenty x Puma Avanti Pony shoe, which was adorned with furry calf hair and featured a unique speckled pattern on every pair. Needless to say, every Fenty x Puma drop sells out within the day.

The soccer-inspired Avanti L shoe marked the superstar’s return to footwear in September 2023. Despite their original debut in 2001, Puma Avanti shoes are a distinct heritage design, as they blend the retro runner appeal of the brand’s 1978 Easy Rider silhouette and the 1998 Jil Sander King football shoe. Topped with premium leather uppers and grounded in gum rubber soles, the streamlined sneaker is right at home in this year’s footwear trends — and resembles the silhouette of the coveted Puma Speedcat sneaker that has yet to restock for the season.

“Football is a universal language that brings people together from all over the world, all walks of life, and I wanted to pay homage to that,” Rihanna told FN ahead of the Avanti’s debut in black and chrome colorways. The new Avanti collection includes children’s sizing for little kids and toddlers, too. “We had to extend the line to kids so the whole family can be a part of this,” said the superstar.
