adidas and Fear of God Athletics have officially dropped the highly-anticipated seasonal collection that includes the buzzed-about Basketball II Sneakers in a rich chocolate colorway. Introducing a new seasonal capsule of essential, sports-focused footwear, the adidas sub-brand continues to push boundaries — much like founder Jerry Lorenzo promised.

Earlier this year, Lorenzo mentioned that his collaborative label with adidas had more sneakers on the way, including a revamped pair of basketball shoes that put performance at the forefront. From the get-go, adidas Ultraboost 5X sneakers‘ mesh construction is remarkably breathable — enough for the breeze from my open door to blow through the toe box as I lace them up to go outside. This PRIMEKNIT upper is rounded out with a sock-style design that’s equal parts secure and stretchy, cradling the foot and providing the perfect fit. While the tongue isn’t as plush as those on other adidas running shoes, the Ultraboost 5X makes up for it with mobility and stability. And with its traditional 10mm drop, it offers ample calf and heel support with every stride.

Once I walked out the door, the Ultraboost 5X’s X-shaped TORSION system and Molded External Heel served me — a constant overpronator — well on my morning laps around the block, correcting my gait from the ground up without the bulkiness of other stability running shoes I’ve tested. My inconveniently large size 14 weighs 12.8 ounces per shoe, which still stands up well against other big brands’ flagship runners. For comparison’s sake, previous Ultraboost iterations in size 9 weighed as much as 12.7 ounces, so the 5X offers an impressive decrease while adding nine extra millimeters of Light BOOST foam: the most responsive cushioning system powered by the brand’s signature Boost tech.

Weight aside, trusty heel-to-toe comfort truly sets adidas’ Ultraboost 5X sneakers apart from previous pairs. After a couple of steps in these top adidas sneakers, the emphasis on energy return was evident, and that’s all thanks to the airy and responsive Light BOOST midsole.

Peters states, “Traditional Oxfords and dress shoes are typically made with a stacked leather heel and thin leather or open foam insole.” 

Distinguished by their closed lacing and 19th-century university origins, they feature eyelet tabs beneath the vamp rather than on top of them. In other words, its strict lacing system requires people to buy a pair that fits them perfectly, as it offers a small amount of breathing room to adjust tightness and feel.

Nevertheless, this shouldn’t define your purchase, as “these silhouettes can all be styled nicely with a suit or business casual attire.”

According to Peters, the leather heel and plain foam insole are great “if you want a shoe that a cobbler can easily resole and if you want a very traditional look.” However, this will impact cushioning, and “the downside of this is that those are not forgiving materials and will almost always be less comfortable than a shoe that uses more modern, expanded materials, like EVA, PU, or TPU.”
• Material: As Peters mentions, the traditional construction is tried-and-true, often implementing materials such as leather, suede or patent leather and placing them atop an open sole.
