Adidas has redesigned its Ultraboost franchise from the ground up in a bid to maximize energy while delivering the lightest sneaker yet.

The Adidas Ultraboost 5 and Ultraboost 5X, not to be confused with the Ultraboost 5.0, features a re-engineered LightBoost midsole that adds 9mm more foam. Energy return has been increased by 2 percent at the forefoot compared to the Ultraboost Light, which had been the lightest Ultraboost sneaker to date, while weight has been reduced by 34 grams. Adidas’ Torsion system helps provide support in the midsole, and a new adaptive Primeknit upper offers an enhanced fit with better breathability.

The upper is available with or without the cage, denoting the difference between the Ultraboost 5 and Ultraboost 5X. Adidas has made the 5X the focus for the U.S. while targeting the 5 for the global market.

“The Ultraboost is a true running icon and this is our best yet, Simon Lockett, Adidas footwear product marketing category director, said in a press release. “82 percent of people that have tested it say they prefer its energy return to their own shoes, and 70 percent say they had more fun while running wearing it. That’s always been the superpower of Ultraboost, especially now it’s back with more Boost, and a lighter weight than ever before.”

To help inform the Ultraboost 5’s design, adidas commissioned research that found one in five 18- to 24-year-old runners cited their energy levels as their biggest concern.

“The next generation is under a lot of pressure, burnt out, feels disorientated at the state of the world and there are so many demands on their energy and time,” said Dr. Eliza Filby, a historian of general evolution who led the research. “When it comes to making a choice about what they focus on, physical exercise like running can often be one of the first things to go. 60 percent of those who don’t dedicate as much time as they’d like to sport, mention a lack of energy as the main reason, despite the positive endorphins it releases.”

The Adidas Ultraboost 5 and Ultraboost 5X are out now for Adidas AdiClub members, and the global launch will follow on July 18 through Adidas’ website. Pricing is set at $180.
