Nike is setting its sights on the budget Y2K-era runner market with a new sneaker release that readers can expect to see plenty of in the new year.

Recently circulated on social media is the Nike V5 Rnr, a new-yet-familiar-looking silhouette that should appeal to fans of the sporty 2000s aesthetic. Visually similar to the trending Nike V2K Run and its inspiration, the Zoom Vomero 5, the upcoming V5 Rnr simplifies things for a more streamlined — and wallet friendly — sneaker.

The new shoe retains many of the details that make up its muses including a low-top runner silhouette, mesh base with synthetic overlays and a sculpted foam midsole. And while the V2K Run and Zoom Vomero 5 retail at $120 and $160, respectively, the V5 Rnr is slated to sell at the far more palatable price point of just $90.

The sneaker’s sub-$100 retail pricing could be what gives the V5 Rnr an edge against some of Nike’s competition. Asics has recently found great success with its $95 retro-inspired Gel-1130 sneaker. New Balance’s 530 model, which is priced at $100, has also been a popular option for those seeking the 2000s-era look for less.

And this isn’t the only lifestyle sector Nike is set to pepper with wallet-friendly options. The brand will release in 2025 a new women’s model known as the Pacific which is reminiscent of the Adidas Samba and will retail for just $75.

In 2024, Nike received flack from industry insiders and consumers alike for its perceived lack of innovation in the marketplace. While these frugal footwear options are far from cutting edge, introducing new models with trending looks at prices everyday shoppers can afford could ultimately prove bountiful for the Beaverton, Ore.-based company.

A slew of official product images for upcoming Nike V5 Rnr colorways are already making the rounds on the internet, which is a likely indication of an approaching release. Readers can expect the Nike V5 Rnr to begin hitting stores during early ’25 for $90.
